Dell Networking OS10 using GNS3

Dell EMC Networking OS10 combines the best of Linux, open computing, and networking to advance open networking disaggregation. OS10 is a transformational software platform which provides networking hardware abstraction through a common set of APIs.
You can enable consistency across compute and network resources for your system operator (sysops) groups that require server-like manageability, as well as leverage your existing network con€guration.
You can simulate OS10 devices using OS10 VM appliances. The OS10 VM appliances execute the same software deployed on OS10-enabled hardware devices, with the exception of the hardware abstraction layer. The OS10 VM hardware abstraction layer simulates hardware devices in a VM environment.

All CLI commands as well as RESTCONF and SNMP interfaces are available in the OS10 simulation environment. You can build sandbox environments to learn open networking concepts, and prototype network operations and scripts risk-free.

All OS10 CLI commands and north-bound interfaces (RESTCONF, SNMP) are available including:

  • System management (SSH, AAA, DHCP, and so on)

L3 data plane and control plane (using Linux functionality)

  • LACP
  • VLAN
  • LLDP
  • VLT

OS10 feature limitations

  • No ACL or QoS support (NPU is not available) — ACL and QoS CLI commands are available (but have no effect on trafc)
  • Limited L2 functionality (NPU is not available on simulator) — no spanning-tree control plane functionality
  • No breakout mode for simulated ports
  • Defaults to S6000-ON hardware platform simulation


  • Workstation or laptop with 16 GB RAM or larger recommended
  • 64-bit x86 CPU with 2 GHz or faster core speed (dual-core or larger recommended)
  • SDD with 64 GB available space
  • Virtualization environment — you can use either Windows, Linux, or VMware ESXi as a host system for the GNS3 Server VM environment

Setup Cisco CSR 1000v

Setup a Cisco CSR 1000v is not much different from i’ve explained with IOS-XRv. This product runs IOS-XE image which is great for my CCIE SP studies. I have in my lab 10 of them using 3.12S, this version has a major change regarding Licensing.

Evaluation Licenses—Cisco IOS XE 3.12S and Earlier

Prior to the Cisco IOS XE 3.13S release, the Cisco CSR 1000V came bundled with a 60-day evaluation license included with the software image, providing:

  • Premium technology package features
  • 50 Mbps maximum throughput

The license is activated by entering the license boot level command and rebooting the router.

When the 60-day evaluation license expires, the maximum throughput reverts to 2.5 Mbps and to the Standard feature set upon reload.

Evaluation Licenses—Cisco IOS XE 3.13S and Later

Beginning with the Cisco IOS XE 3.13S release, the CSR 1000V boots by default with the following features:

  • AX technology package features
  • 100 Kbps maximum throughput

Evaluation License Options

Evaluation licenses valid for 60 days are available at the Cisco licensing portal.

The evaluation license options enable test driving additional technology packages and higher throughputs. (The throughputs available through evaluation licenses are the highest supported throughput levels for the package type.)

  • IPBase Technology package, 10 Gbps
  • SEC Technology package, 5 Gbps
  • APP Technology package, 5 Gbps
  • AX Technology package, 2.5 Gbps
  • 1000 broadband sessions

Finally i got it CCIE#47868

I started in January with a goal in mind, get my Magic Number on my last attempt because i wouldn´t try again (brute-force nooo….)
This is the most hard exams in Networking Industry, well i did not try JNCIE yet but i believe will be tricky for sure.

So this time my trip included the Lab exam in Brussels and holidays in Amsterdam, and probably this was the key to my success. The facilities in the LAB were good like last time, so no issues with keyboard or something else.

I was afraid of new section DIAG, because the examples gave by Cisco had a lot´s of information….And to read it i would need time, probably more, but depends obviously the complexity of the ticket. For those who are thinking to face the lab, take a look on the following docs:

I did the TS without problems, but skipped on first round 2 of them, after solve all the tickets i saw a strange behavior but i solved it.

Can you do the exam without stress/anxiety?

I think the answer is no for sure… I think on this attempt i was more stresses because was my third, so FAIL comes always in my mind, but i was more relaxed. Strange isn´s it?

Revision CCIE Service Provider Exam Topic Updates from v3.0 to v4.0

Cisco announced a new Exam for CCIE SP v4, this new exam will follow a new structure like the newest one CCIE R&S v5.

The last day to test for both the Written Exam v3.0 (350-029) and the Lab Exam v3.0 will be May 21, 2015.  Beginning May 22, 2015, the Written Exam v4.0 (400-201) and the Lab Exam v4.0 will be available for testing.

Qual a estratégia para o exame CCNP-TSHOOT?

Este exame é composto por 3 secções, os quais já descrevi aqui no blog. A minha preocupação eram os 13 tickets do Lab devido ao fator tempo, e não tanto as questões da 1ª e 2ª secções.

Notas para o Exame

  • Todos os tickets resumem-se a problemas de falta de conetividade entre o Cliente1 e o Servidor Web.
  • No Cliente1 apenas Ă© possĂ­vel executar comandos de ping/ipconfig
  • Todos os tickets sĂŁo totalmente independentes, ou seja, o Cliente1 pode ter IP no Ticket 1 e nĂŁo no Ticket 2 (misconfig DHCP)
  • Durante o exame nĂŁo Ă© necessário efetuar qualquer configuração, apenas indicar qual o equipamento causador do problema e a respetiva solução.

Estratégia antes do Exame

  • Configurar de raĂ­z a topologia no GNS3, permite ficar familiarizado com a mesma

Estratégia durante o Exame

  1. Verificar se o Cliente1 tem IP
  2. Verificar a existĂŞncia de conetividade entre o Cliente1 e o Gateway
  3. Verificar a existĂŞncia de conetividade entre o Cliente1 e os diferentes Routers (R1;R2;R3;R4)
  4. Verificar a existĂŞncia do routing do Servidor Web e a subnet do Cliente1 nos diversos Routers

Os tickets podem apresentar problemas relacionados com: HSRP, VLAN Allowed, Peering BGP, DHCP,  Routing Redistribute, Routing Authentication, VACL, NAT entre outras.
