Update ESXi from CLI

I was running the base image of ESXi 6.0, and i decided to update it to the latest version

Upgrade the ESXi from CLI it’s really easy, just following the next steps:

  1. Enter ESXi Maintenance mode
  2. Download the update from my.vmware.com (in my case vsphere 6.0 update 3)
  3. Upload to ESXi using Datastore Browser and connect to ESXi via SSH
  4. Install the update via CLI esxcli software vib install -d <path-to-update-file>
  5. Reboot

Note: The updates are cumulative, you just need to download the latest one available under your account

[[email protected]:~] esxcli software vib install -d /vmfs/volumes/Datastore/update-from-esxi6.0-6.0_update03.zip

Due the nature of operation we are doing, we require a reboot as we can see.

Installation Result
Message: The update completed successfully, but the system needs to be reboot ed for the changes to be effective.

Wishes of Cisco Champion

I’ve thinking on this, a really cool thing could be Cisco providing extended trial licenses for those who live and breathe Cisco (true DNA of a Cisco Champion). Also part of the bundle could a Cisco VIRL license be included and/or a voucher for a Cisco Press ebook.

Maybe we can see some of these next year 2018.

Fingers crossed.
